Hazardous materials containers are specially tested and UN-approved packaging used for the safe storage and transport of hazardous substances. Which type of packaging may be used depends, among other things, on the nature and hazard level of the substance in question.

The designations 4H2, 11H2, and 50H describe the respective packaging types:

• 4H2: Rigid plastic box with a removable lid—for solid hazardous substances and smaller quantities
• 11H2: Large plastic container without rigid inner packaging—for larger quantities of powdered, granular, or solid hazardous substances
• 50H: large plastic packaging, such as a large pallet box—suitable for the storage and transport of solid hazardous substances as well as chemical products, batteries, powders, and hazardous inner packaging

In addition, the codes X and Y indicate the packaging groups for which the packaging is approved. X stands for packaging groups I, II, and III and thus for a broader or higher range of hazards. Y applies to packaging groups II and III.
